THE ENGLISHMEN IN AUSTRALIA.
The first test match between the English Eleven and combined Australia began at Sydney on Friday last and was continued on Saturday in the presence of 30,000 spectators. The Australians were the first to bat, and before the last wicket fell on Saturday had run up the phenomenal total of 586 runs, Giffen’s innings of 161 is described as a perfect masterpiece; whilst Gregory displayed dashing cricket for his fine innings of 201; Iredale contributed 81, and the veteran Blackham had run up 74 before Richardson, the English fast bowler, beat him. Darling, the hero of the Adelaide match was clean bowled first ball. At the close of the day’s play the Englishmen had lost three wickets f0r123 runs, Ward being not out with 66. x
