mME ATO FOREIGN. The American Strikes. Chicago, July 9. Chicago is in a state of chaos, like Piiris under the Commune. The mob has burned the greater portion of the rolling stock. A mob of 15,000 assailed the troops in Chicago “with stones. The military fired, wounding 25, several fatally. A body of armed police finally dispersed the rioters.
Before firing on the strikers, the military made a bayonet charge, killing the ringleaders. They used their rifles freely, and after the men mobbed them, replied with their revolvers. The Chicago news declares that the strikers believe the President will soon proclaim military despotism. Washington, July 10. Martial law lias been proclaimed in Chicago, and the troops have received orders to suppress tbs outrages at anj price. This has cowed the strikers. Postal traffic has been resumed, and the worst is believed to be over. The threat of a general strike to-morrow is not believed. The strikers at San Francisco arc arming themselves with rifles and drilling. Seven hundred bluejackets will assist the garrison to maintain order, and the warships will be brought up from Mare Island Naval Station. The strikers dynamited a train at Pueblo. The Pacific Cable. London, July 10. Numbers of members of the House of Commons have urged the Premier to support the Pacific cable and mail service, on condition that the colonies contribute to the naval defence of the Empire. 75 Persons Drowned. St. Petersburg, July 10. The steamer Vladimir collided with the Columbia in the Black Sea and sank, 75 persons being drowned. A Mysterious Murder. Brisbane, July 10. A mysterious muider is reported near Mnckay. A man named Anderson was found dead, having been slashed to death with a cane knife. Two murders of a similar character have taken place in the same district previously, and the perpetrators remain undiscovered. Bank of New Zealand. London, July 10. The opinion prevails in the city that the Bank of New Zealand would have a better chance of success if it issued stock instead of shares. Illness of the Pope. Vienna, July 10. It is reported that owing to the serious character of the Pope’s illness, the Cardinals in Austro-Hungary have been advised to prepare for a Papal Conclave. London, July 10. Lord Dunraven has decided to build a racing yacht on the lines of the Valkyrie. Paris, July 10. A fire at Toulon arsenal has caused great loss, Brisbane, July 10. The schooner Mary, belonging to the London Missionary Society, has been wrecked in the Papuan Gulf. All bauds were saved. Sydney, July 10. A letter has been received by the Government from Johannesburg suggesting that considerable benefit would accrue to the colony, commercially, if represented in South Africa, where the markets offer increasing facilities for the sale of many colonial products. Launceston, July 10. The Auckland barquentine Indiana, with a cargo of guano, was totally wrecked on Cape Barren, The vessel which discovered the. wreck reports that the Indiana was deserted, and it is believed the crew have gone to Clark Island.
