OAONUI.

— — (Our own Correspondent.)

Mr McGloin, our member for the County Council, is to be commended for the zeal he displays in studying the state of the road, down the Opuuake way, as f»ir as the southern boundary ; and be is working at some expense, for it is rather too much to expect a man to not only give his time but bis ca;h expenditure as well. When the chairman u-ecl to travel be was paid his expenses, and why should, such not apply to our energetic member ? Another matter also ought to be takeu into consideration : that is the cost of the temporary bridge built by Mr Maxwell. As the bridge is such a boon to the public I fail t d sea why Mr Maxwell should not be recouped the cost; it is not generous of the public not to do so. The public subscribed upwards of £2O for the construction of a bridge which is not up yet, and Mr Maxwell built the other some months ago and it has stood a very severe test by bullock wagons loaded with'sawn timber crossing it, and it is only right that the many should subscribe and recoup him. I hope this reminder will have the desired effect, as it is a meritorious case of patriotism. I see the contractor has started the Heimama contract. There is an empty dray in possession and a small heap of firewood stacked ready to boil the billy. The tollgato bouse could be made into comfortable winter quarters for the contractor, house rent free, firewood in the river, with plenty of water. Mr Silvester has a brother on a visit hero fiora Sydney, and he admires New Zealand immensely.
