COLLEGIANS WIN WOODLANDS GOOD RECOVERY Collegians batted first and W. Reeves and Petersen gave the side a good start by adding 23 before Petersen* was run out through a misunderstanding. Both batsmen had iet-offs through faulty fielding but nevertheless batted nicely and confidently. Warren joined W. Reeves and by playing some very nice shots took the score to 59 before Edwards on. got one past Warren with his score at 14. Wally Reeves saw his brother come and go but shortly after being joined by Badeley lost his wicket to a good one .from Dick Mason. Reeves’ 25 was a very good and valuable innings and this lad promises to have a very good season. Badeley started off with a four to leg but saw three batsmen, come and go for ducks, and it was left for Stern to hold his end up stubbornly while Badeley went for the runs and retired with 79 to his credit including 4 sixers and 9 fours. Stern was not out 9 when the last wicket fell at 167. This total would have been much smaller had Woodlands’ fielding been up to their usual standard. Mason 3 for 25 and Edwardsou 3 for 33 were the most successful bowlers. Taken right through Woodlands’ bowling was very steady. Faced with 157 Woodlands were soon in trouble as Grant, D. Beattie and Edwardson were all back on the bank with only 6 runs on the score board. Mason and Woodside then improved their position and 30 went up on the board before Mason failed to get squarely on to one from Noonan and was out to a catch at point for 14 made up of 3 fours and two singles. Woodside and Rowe then carried on merrily, Howe being very severe on any legbails, and his 20 runs were more than welcome at this stage, meanwhile Woodside had batted confidently for 22. J. Beattie was next man to get going and pulled a ball on to his wickets when 14. It was left to Jim Collins to supply the splendid fighting finish. He nursed the bowling in good style and showed some very good judgment in waiting for the ball to hit to the boundary. The score had mounted to 113 before Badeley eventually got one past Collins’ defence and brought to a close a great fightinginnings of 31 including 6 fours. To fill in the remaining time Len Rayner batted for Woodlands and once again showed consistent form to score 16 in even time, and so came to an end a very enjoyable and interesing game. Warren 4 for 20, J. Reeves 2 for 15, and T. .Noonan 2 for 19 returned the best figures and all bowled well. Next Saturday City, and Collegians will try conclusions, commencing at 10 a.m.
