DETERIORATION EXPLAIN ED The following letter from the office of the Minister of Works, has been, received by the secretary of the Opotiki Chamber of Commerce: — ‘With reference to your letter of the Ist. October regarding the condition of tho Whakatane-Gisborne via Waioeka State Highway, I am advised by the chairman of the Main Highways Board that the maintenance of the length between Opotiki and Taneatua has deteriorated for the following reasons:— (1) During the last two or three months there has been a very wet spell of weather in this area. “(2) Maintenance metal is generally obtained from the Waimana River but this river has been in semi-flood for quite a considerable period and-'it has not been possible to obtain maintenance metal. ’‘(3) There has been repeated breakdowns with the Department s planer and grader which are allocated for the maintenance on this particular highway but the replacement of delapidated machinery by more modern plant is rapidly being overcome. “What with better weather, which is long overdue in .this area, and more modern plant it is not expected there will be any cause for complaint in the future.”
