A BIASSED PRESS?
Newspapers came in for some criticism at the meeting addressed, by M;r. W. Sullivan on Saturday night. Mr. Sullivan referred to Mr. Nash’s intenion to start a newsprint factory. Mr. Nash had said that the newsprint would be sold to those who would print the truth on it. Who was to be the judge of what was the truth —Mr. Nash! Jn reply to an interjector, Mr. Sullivan said that the New Zealand Herald had given the Labour Party, speakers a fair spin. Ho did not know of one country newspaper which had not given the Labour Party a fair spin. A lady’s voice: “What about The Opotiki News? Mr. Sullivan said that he considered that The Opotiki News had been fair to both parties. He did not know of any more biassed newspapers than the Standard and the Southern Gross, which papers put a wrong interpretation on everything possible. When Mr. Nash sold the newsprint the papers would have to print on it wliat the government approved, if the government did not approve they would get no newsprint. It was easy to vote a country into a state control system but how were they going to get out ol it. What opportunity would the young people have. They would become a number, that would be all, with no chance of advancement. A government that could do the things that this 'government had done—granting a bursary to a military defaulter—not agreeing to give Mr. Holland one hour on the air on the last night—that government had lost the confidence of the people of New Zealand.
