ALLEGED BENZINE THEFT ARREST AT OPOTIKI WHAKATANE YOUTHS CHARGED A smart arrest was effected by Constable W. R. Cooper on Wednesday evening at #bout 6 o’clock near the Opotiki Wharf, when three youths were detamed in connection with the theft of benzine in Whakatane.

The threo youths appeared at the Opotiki Police Court yesterday before Messrs. E. J. Short and'C. Pipe, J.P’s. and were remanded to appear at the Whakatane Court on October 31. Sergeant J. Isbister conducted proceedings on behalf of the police. The youths concerned were John Alexander Caulfield, Otakiri, labourer, aged 18 years James Keefe, Te Teko, Maori, labourer, aged T 9 years; and Owen Hector Swan, Otakiri, labourer, aged 19 years. The first two youths were charged that on October 22 at Edgecombe they stole 5 gallons of benzine valued at 14s 2d the property of Peter Ratahi. The third accused was charged withstealing 9 gallons of benzine at Otakiri valued at Tl 6s the property of the New Zealand Government.
