WIND AND RAIN.
THE RIVER OVERFLOWS.
SLIP ON RAILWAY LINE.
During the past few days the weather - has been particularly stormy, and there has been heavy rain accompanied by high wind. Last night the wind blew with almost hurricane force, and the rain was so heavy that there were faars of a flood. About ten o'clock this morning howeverj there was a change for the better; the wind moderated considerably, and the rain ceased. The weather doe/ not seem to be by any means settled yet, and there is every indication of more rain coming. Reports from up-country state that it is still raining there. Notwithstanding the heavy rain, very little damage was done. A few paddocks were flooded in the vicinity of Puke Road and Rye Lane, but the water did not rise [sufficiently to enter any oi the residences. A miniature lake formed at the corner of Wharf Street and Normanby Road, due possibly to the blocking ot the drains. Just after two o'clock this afternoon the river broke over the bank in front ot McAndrew's timber mill, and the dirty brown water flowed down Francis Street into some ot the lower portions of the town. The rise in the river was very rapid between ten o'clock this morning and two o'clock this afternoon owing to the water from up-country coming down. As we go to press the water is just up to the level of the railway bridge. On the Paeroa-Karangahake Road there is a lot ot water in front of Mr Porritl's residence, and carts had difficulty in getting along the road, the water being up to the axles. A slip on the railway lire at Mackaytown this morning caused a little disorganisation of the traffic. The early morning trains to and from Waihi to ■ Paeroa got through safely, but shortly alterwards a slip came down on the line. A number of men were soon engaged in clearing the debris, but the tram was delayed and did not get through to - Paeroa untiHwenty past twelve, -Consequent'y the connection with the trains to Thames and Auckland was missed. A train to Tc Aroha was put on, and passengers taken as far as that township.
