HOW THEY SELECT A LIBERAL CANDIDATE.
(To the Editor.)
Sir,—l think most of your readers will agree with me when I say that the way the Government candidate for this district has been selected savours very much of the "hole and corner " way of managing matters. It was clearly understood throughout the various branches °of the Liberal Federation that the Government candidate was to be selected by ballot, and the delegates" who were sent to meet the Premier at Paeroa on Sunday had no right at all to select a candidate. It seems to me, Mr Editor, as if it had all been arranged from the start, and that the selection of a man was merely a farce. When Mr Cadman was here he picked ont Mr Palmer as a likely man, and now Mr Seddon comes along and the delegates, hold a meeting in a hurry and fix on Mr Palmer and Mr Drum.ni. I suppose they thought it would look too bad to fix on Mr Palmer—who is a stranger to most of the people in the district — straight away, but the two names are to"-be sent to the Executive of the Federation to mako a final selection. But does anyone doubt for a moment who the executive will fix upon ? The ruse is too transparent altogether.— I am, etc., Daylight.
