HARBOUR BOARD

THREE LABOUR SEATS City Representation On the first occasion in many years on which the system of representation on the Otago Harbour Board has been wholly elective, three of the four city seats were gained by Labour candidates. Those returned included the sitting chairman, Mr W. R. Clarke, who topped the poll, and the secretary of the Dunedin Waterside Workers’ Union, Mr S. B. Macdonald, who was formerly a Government appointee. The other city members elected were Mr P. G. Connolly, a Labour Member of Parliament, and one of the four Citizens’ Association candidates, Mr W. J. Winefield. Three sitting Citizens’ Association candidates were defeated. In the voting on Saturday, Mr T. Anderson led Mr C. O. Knewstubb by 47 votes for the Port Chalmers-West Harbour seat. The position is not wholly decisive yet, for about 80 postal and declaration votes have to be counted.
