NEW MAYOR
St. Kilda Borough SIX INDEPENDENT COUNCILLORS The sitting Mayor of St. Kilda, Mr W. Rutherford, was defeated by a member of the last council, Mr A. H. Finnie, in a close poll; the new Mayor winning by 221 votes, on the preliminary count. Mr Finnie has taken a prominent part in the activities of the Works Committee on the St. Kilda Council.
For the council, two sitting members, J. R. F. Braithwaite (Labour) and N. M. Shepherd (Independent), topped the poll with 1725 votes. Five sitting councillors were returned. Six of the new council are Independents, while four have been elected on the Labour ticket. New councillors are Thomas Halli-
day (L.), Edwin Longworth (Ind.), L. J. Wraight (Ind.), F. S. S. Grocott (L.), and P. A. Traill (L.). Cr Longworth has been a member of previous councils and .at the last election he stood against Mr Rutherford for the mayoralty in a three-cornered contest. The third candidate on that occasion, Mr P. Cull (L.), missed election for the council this year.
