UNION’S PROPOSALS
Replacement Of Transit Housing Scheme PA CHRISTCHURCH, Oct. 15. Three proposals to replace the Government’s transit housing plans have been made by the council of the New Zealand Carpenters’ Union. They are the immediate construction of State rental houses at a greater rate, and as high astandard as in the past, the construction of blocks of modem flats for adult families, and the construction of pensioners’ cottages. “ The union refuses to co-operate in the construction of sub-standard transit houses, such as proposed by the Government, or the construction of poorer types of dwellings in the form of camps and barracks for civilian occupation,” said a statement issued by the council after a meeting in Christchurch. “We agree to construct a limited number of single units of approved design for temporary occupation, provided that the union has direct representation of each district allocation committee for the purpose of supervising the period of tenancy,” concludes the statement.
