EQUAL PAY PRINCIPLE

Right Restored To Adult Female Workers Special Correspondent WELLINGTON. Oct. 15. A decision of the Arbitration Court issued at week-end restores the right of adult female workers in several large industries to be paid the same rate of wages as men. In these industries, notably the tramways, undertaking and the grocery trade, female workers have for some years had equal pay for equal work. When the court issued its interim wage order the maximum increase granted to women under any award was 4s 9d a week. Women in industries where equal pay was customary at once complained of unfair discrimination. A joint case was taken to the court and with the employers’ representative. Mr W. N. Hewitt, dissenting, the court has granted these women the same increase as men—namely, 5 per cent, with a maximum of 7s a week. The court, however, has not made this adjustment retrospective to May 8, as requested. Instead, the court has dated it from October 13.
