CRICKET OPENS

Albion’s Sound Position LOW SCORE BY UNION The 1950-51 senior cricket competition went off to a flying start on Saturday afternoon, when six teams took the field. The day was sunny, and the wickets in good start-or-the-season condition. A feature of the afternoon’s play was Union’s low score of 99 against Waitaki, which replied with 189 for eight wickets. St. Kevin’s did not fare very well against Albion, being dismissed for 106, to which Albion replied with 194 for four wickets at stumps. The Oamaru-St. Patrick's match developed into an uneven struggle, with Oamaru showing all-round superiority. St. Patrick’s was dismissed for 100, Oamaru replying with 242. G. McFadzien’s score of 44 not out for Union was the top one of the side. McFadzien opened for Union, and “ stayed put ” while the rest of the side marched in and out, only two others securing double figures. I. Geddes played havoc with St. Kevin’s bowling, scoring 92 not out for Albion. His scored included nine 4’s, 10 doubles, and 32 singles. In Oamaru’s strike D. Hall retired at 50. A glance at the bowling average indicates that several bowlers have struck form early in the season. Herron (Oamaru) took five wickets for 11 runs to secure the best average. He was followed by R. Hurst (Waitaki), four for 14; Lee (Albion), three for 16; J. Maddigan (Union), five for 30; Griffin (St. Patrick's), four for 34; and B. Bennett (Waitaki), three for 34.
