PLUNKET BABIES

Photographic Exhibition COMPREHENSIVE DISPLAY The Plunket baby photographic exhibition in the DIC was opened yesterday afternoon by the Mayor, Sir Donald Cameron. Commenting on the number of photographs shown, Sir Donald said the babies were a credit to the city, to the mothers and fathers, and to the society which does such fine work in caring for the babies. “The Plunket Society needs extra money to enable it to carry on this work,” he said, “ and the women of the committee are to be congratulated on organising an exhibition which, it is hoped, will raise funds for the society.” Mrs L. F. Cleghorn, president of the Dunedin branch, thanked the DIC for its co-operation and appealed for public support for the exhibition. Over 240 photographs of babies are on view. They are arranged in five sections, according to age. In the first group are those under six months. Both smiling and serious, they, are as yet largely unconcerned with the activities of the photographer who has tried to take them at their best. The next section, from 6 to 12 months, has a slightly bigger entry and a wider variety of expressions. But it is in the C section —babies from 12 months to 2 years—that the most appealing photographs are seen. There are babies in all their many moods — intent, absorbed in toys, happy and gay, perplexed and astonished. Some of the small boys already show a masculine seriousness, some small girls are clearly determined conquettes. The last two sections—children from two years to three years and twins—have relatively fewer entries but include some excellent portrayals. Each photo is marked by a number and a name and the competition will be decided by the number of votes cast for each photograph. The exhibition will remain open until Friday, October 20.
