CONTROL OF DIPHTHERIA

Mothers’ Co-operation Necessary Daily Times Special Service AUCKLAND, Oct. 2. “It is possible to eliminate diphtheria from Auckland,” said Dr J. Egerton Caughey in a lecture delivered to the Auckland Institute in the University College Hall tonight. “ but only if the public co-operate and demand it. It was done in Toronto years ago, he pointed out, and the figures for New York are just as impressive. Three-quarters of a million children were immunised in five years and there were 23.326 fewer cases and 1484 fewer deaths in two comparable five-year periods. « This can be done if mothers would co-operate in the immunisation of their children and would yield handsome dividends in reduced hospital beds and, what is more’ important, in reduced mortality among our child population,” he added.
