AUTHORITY GRANTED

Operation Of Trolley

Buses

SERVICE FOR ST. HILDA

Authority was granted the Dunedin City Council Transport Department last night to operate vehicles weighing more than 12 tons—trolley buses—on St. Kilda roads. The authority was given by the St. Kilda Borough Council at its meeting after an assurance was received by the council that the buses would not travel at an excessive speed. , , , . , The Transport Department advised that while no time table had yet been prepared for the St. Kilda route, ample time would be allowed to obviate any necessity for speeding to maintain the schedule. It was expected that there would be three, six and twelve minutes headways. Cr N. H. Shepherd commented that 30 mile’s an hour was too fast for the roads in the borough, and would damage them just as the present buses damaged them. Speeding Cars

The council had been much concerned about the speed of the trolley buses, said the Mayor, Mr W. Rutherford, but the speed of some private cars’ traversing the roads, especially Victoria road, had surprised him. He would draw this to the attention of the traffic inspectors who patrolled the borough. Cr Shepherd said that modern cars did not constitute as much of a menace as three and four-ton trucks moving at speed. , . Cr D. J. Simpson maintained that traffic regulations in the borough were generally well observed, and he thought it unnecessary to place undue emphasis on isolated cases. Good service was given by the Traffic Department In patrolling the roads.

Children’s Appeal

A donation of £SO to the United Nations Children’s Appeal Fund was included in the accounts passed for payment.
