BRIGHTER PLAY

South Island Badminton Championships NO SURPRISE RESULTS The appearance of some of the leading players in New Zealand gave the South Island and Otago badminton championships added sparkle when they were continued in the Brydone Hall last night. J. E. Robson a former New Zealand champion, was not extended in any of his games, and his chances of winning his way through to the championship finals are extremely bright. Matches were played in both championship and handicap events in three grades, and the general standard was higher than on the first night. Nine courts are used at the Brydone Hall, and more than 140 games have been run off on the first two nights. Although most of the competitors come from Otago, the championships will lose nothing in standard for that Many of those competing have taken a prominent part in New Zealand championship meetings, P. Skelt and L. A. Rankin being the present national Doubles title holders. It is expected that the finals, to be held on Saturday night, will be of a high standard, but as the championships have still four nights to go it is difficult to surmise those likely to survive the earlier rounds. Only games in the first round have been played in most of the championship events, and there have been no surprises so far. Mrs C. Lindsay accounted for the 13-year-old Sonia Cox in straight sets after having a close tussle in the first one. Mrs Lindsay is an Otago representative player, and under the circumstances the efforts of the younger player were most promising. All players mentioned in the results are from Otago unless otherwise stated. The results were:— CHAMPIONSHIP GAMES A Grade Men’s Singles—B. T. McNamara beat R. Stark 15—2, 15—5; L. Rankin beat W.
