UMPIRES MEET
Mr H. P. Thomson Elected Life Member The support which the umpires gave to cricket in Otago and the good standard of umpiring were acknowledged by the president of the Otago Cricket Association, Mr W. S. Armitage, at the annual meeting of the Otago Cricket Umpires’ Association last night. Mr Armitage said his association was concerned at the poor attendance of cricketers at the lectures given by the umpires. The president, Mr A. Jelley, referred to the deaths of Mr A. Downes and Dr H. K. Edie, who had close connections with the Umpires’ Association. Mr H. P. Thomson was elected a life member of the association. It was said that Mr Thomson had given outstanding service to the game, and that his health would prevent him from controlling many more matches. Mr Thomson umpired the last game between the MCC and Otago, and he stood behind the crease at many representative matches. He was formerly a vice-presiuent of the Umpires’ Association. Officers elected for the ensuin: year were: Patron, the president of the OCA, Mr W. S. Armitage; president, Mr S. Tonkinson; vice-presidents, Messrs H. Fogarty and T. McAlpine; secretary, Mr W. Rowlands; committee —Messrs A. Jelley, S. Clarke, J. Harwood; selector, Mr W. Rowlands; delegate to OFCA, Mr H. Fogarty; auditor, Mr J. Porteous.
