Northland Team’s Journey South COST OF £IOOO PA ' WHANGAREI, Sept. 19."* The Northland Rugby representatives are to play the Ranfurly Shield challenge match against South Canterbury at Timaru on September 30s This was decided by a unanimous vote of delegates to a meeting of the Northland Management Committee last night, when it was reported that the estimated cost of the) venture would be approximately £IOOO. The party will leave Whangarei on the afternoon of Wednesday, September 27, and will travel by bus to Auckland. Next morning the Northlanders will fly from Whenuapai to Harewood. The trip to Timaru will be made by bus. The team is expected to reach Timaru between 4 and 4.30 p.m. on the Thurday. The return trip will be made on the Sunday, the party arriving back in Whangarei in the evening. Mr D. K. Ross is to accompany the team as manager. The same 20 players who were in Auckland on Saturday will make the trip. They comprise 10 backs and 10 forwards. The backs are: J. B. Smith, P. Smith, V. Pearson, B. Beazley, N. Cherrington, E. Dunn, K. Pearson, G. Perrin, M. N. Paewai and P. Cherrington. Forwards: T. McHugh, J. Isaacs, C. McCrae, I. Fraser, P. Jones, F. Baume, I. Irvine, E. Martin, E. Jerkovich and N. Stevens. The fifteen for the shield match will be announced after Sunday. The team will have a training run at Auckland on the Wednesday night and at Timaru after its arrival the following day. Changes made in the North Island Rugby team to play the South Island at Auckland on Saturday are:—J. Hotop (Manawatu), a reserve, is replaced by E. Dunn (Northland): L. Richardson (Manawatu) is replaced by K. Matthews (Wairarapa); A. H. Avery (Wellington) is replaced by J. S. F. McGuigan (Auckland); and L. Hohaia (Taranaki) becomes reserve in place of McGuigan. RSA FOOTBALL MATCH “ Gate ” Of £7OO Expected Receipts from the Rugby football match betwen a Returned Services’ team and the Rest of Otago are expected to approximate £7OO. In reporting this at last night’s meeting of the executive of the Dunedin Returned Services’ Association, Mr H. H. Parata said that the Finance Committee had decided that all the receipts should be given to the Nurses’ Memorial Appeal. “The committee feels that this is a most worthy cause, and is anxious to give it full support," he said. Appreciation of the interest of the public, the efforts of the players, and of the attendance of bands, marching teams, athletes and members of the Legion of Frontiersmen was expressed. Special mention was made of the action of the gatekeepers, who gave their services free. “ They are mostly members of this association,’’ commented the president, Mr K. W. Stewart. Mr Parata announced that the sum of £2OO had been bequeathed for the general purposes of the Dunedin RSA by the late Mrs Jessie Hamilton Crust. A further sum from the estate of the late Mr R. S. Mac Fie had brought the total received to £220. This bequest was for welfare purposes. The Dunedin Savings Bank had given £2OO for the erection of headstones on soldiers’ graves. This would almost cover the amount spent during the year.
