AGAIN CONSIDERED

Grants By Borough Council

In accordance with his notice, Cr A. Hamilton moved at the monthly meeting of the Oamaru Borough Council last night that the following recommendation of joint committees, adopted at a special meeting of the council on July 13, be rescinded; The committee regrets it is unable to recommend making a grant to the Oamaru RSA Building Fund and to the Kindergarten Committee. The chairwoman of the Kindergarten Association, Mrs Edna C. McCulloch, again wrote soliciting financial assistance for the kindergarten project. Cr Hamilton, said he presumed the reason for not giving assistance was that the council had no money. He pointed out that the council had completed last year with a credit balance of £2OOO, but the RSA’s request had been delayed so long that the money had been allocated for other purposes. Sneaking of a. kindergarten project, he said it would provide in the future a great service.in Oamaru. The voting being even on the motion, a division'was called, and resulted For: Crs Laney, Hamilton, Wise, Stubbs and Steven. Against: The Mayor, Crs Wilson, Hodge, McEwan and Beatty. On a casting vote of the Mayor, the motion was lost.
