COUNCILS SLOGGER
Efficiency Questioned
The recommendation of the Works Committee that the account of £IOSO received from Messrs Taylor’s Lime Company, Ltd., for one double type slogger as specified, be passed for payment, was opposed at last night's meeting of the Oamaru Borough Council. An amendment that the services of an independent engineer be obtained to report on the efficiency of the crusher, moved by the Mayor and second by Cr McEwan, was lost. Division in the voting was called for and resulted: For—Crs W. R. Laney, A. Wilson, A. Hamilton, O. R. Wise, E. S. Stubbs. T. R. Beatty and B. Steven; against—The Mayor, Mr M. F. E. Cooney, Crs J. I. McEwan and A. E. Hodge. Mr Cooney said he was not satisfied with the statements made about the efficiency of the slogger. There was no guarantee that it would do the work it was purchased to do. He view'ed with apprehension the whole position and the crusher was a liability, which was becoming greater. Cr H. R. Wise said the slogger was doing reasonably well and yesterday it bad put through 95 cubic yards in just under five hours. Inside eight hours, it had put through what the Works Committee considered a fair output. The slogger had given no serious trouble and any breakdowns that had taken place had occurred in other equipment. In reply to a question, the borough engineer said the slogger had dealt with stone 25 to 26 inches in leneth and 10 to 12 inches through. Cr B Stevens said there was no way of determining the capacity of the crusher, until such time as the bottleneck at the quarry face was eliminated, and the slogger kect supplied with a continuous flow of stone.
