FREIGHT SURCHARGE
Chamber Of Commerce ACTION DEFERRED The executive of the Dunedin Chamber of Commerce has considered the effect on consignees in Dynedin of the freight surcharge of 7J per cent, to be levied on cargoes to Auckland from the United Kingdom to compensate for delays occurring ( at Auckland. In a report presented to the chamber yesterday, the executive stated that it had decided to withhold action until an announcement is made by the Prime Minister, Mr Holland, on the matter. The report added that the levy had been suspended until July 1, and strenuous efforts would be made in the meantime for the withdrawal of the surcharge. The Associated Chambers advised that the Reserve Bank had indicated, in answer to an inquiry, that the basis on which funds were made available to business men visiting America was the same as that for all business men in the sterling area. The Reserve Bank was not aware of any change of policy in this matter which was proposed by the new Government. The Transport Committee reported that it had made representations to the Railways Department and the Mount Cook Tourist Company on the subject of an improved bus service between Dunedin and Central Otago and the Lakes District, and the matter was under consideration.
