EIGHTY-FIVE YEARS AGO

FROM THE FILES OF THE ©taoo Climes DUNEDIN, MAY 17, 1865. We extract the following from the report of Mr Warden Lowther Broad, dated Arrow., May 6: The sluicing claims at the Twelve-mile keep quite up to the old standard; indeed, there seems little prospect of any falling off in the yield from this locality for many years to come. Rumours are afloat concerning the discovery of another quartz reef in the district, and at no great distance from the town.”

Mr Warden Worthington, writing from Waitahuna under date May 6, remarks: “The population at Waitahuna has lately been slowly increasing, and there is a more permanent appearance about the place than I have ever seen. The miners, instead of as hitherto living in tents, have erected good substantial huts, many of which do the architects infinite credit. Waipori still increases in importance, and fresh claims under the Extended Claim Regulations are being taken up.”

Our Dunstan correspondent, writing up to May 15, says: “The accounts from the Nevis are satisfactory; the lead proving increasingly rich. Advices from Manuherikia state that a number of diggers have returned from the West Coast, much reduced in circumstances, many having been assisted to return by old mates and friends. The' dredging machines on the river are doing exceedingly well. Some of them pay £l4 and £ls a share weekly. The Hit or Miss Company have been fortunate in good washings during the last few days.”
