MIN OBJECTIVE

Northern Outlet For Dunedin 5 View Of Works Minister The Main North road was of paramount importance to the city, Cr Ireland told the Minister of Works, Mr Goosman, when the Works Committee of the Dunedin City Council waited on him yesterday to seek an assurance that the northern outlet project would 1 be gone on with. ; Cr Ireland said he had heard from one member of the Highways Board that a move was afoot to shelve the North road. From another member - of the board he had heard that Dunedin was going to be forced to accept ’ either the North road or the Port Chalmers road. He knew Dunedin could not expect too much at once, but the North road was paramount. He would deplore any move to defer the work. It had been said, too, that the delay had been caused by. the council -’in that it would not accept the plan, but no plan was yet ready. Mr Goosman told the deputation he had seen the roads concerned. Both were badly in need of rebuilding. The north outlet was the most important one as the present road was “ a bad show” for a city like Dunedin. He could not promise when the work on the new road would be gone on with, but he thought it would be at the . earliest possible opportunity. As part • of the road would be in the city, the question of cost would have to be one for negotiation between the Highways Board and. the city. When the northern outlet survey was completed, he said, a survey of the southern route would be under - “A new road to Port Chalmers is necessary,” said Mr Goosman, “ but let us do the most urgent job first. Let us concentrate on the North road —and a new one—rather than attempting to do major work while the present route is in use. Then you will have two roads.” The deputation also discussed with the Minister future house-building .programmes of his department in so •far as they affected Dunedin.
