PAROCHIALISM

Statement By Mr Goosman REMARKS DIRECTED TO ONE MAN There had been some misconception of his remarks on parochialism in the South Island, said the Minister of Works, M t Goosman, to a deputation from the Otago Expansion League yesterday morning. The Minister said that he had been replying specificially to what one man in a deputation had said at Invercargill. This man had said that if the South Island had a Federal Government it would be much better off. It would be able to reduce taxation by 50 per cent., and perhaps Southland would have some public money spent in the province. “My remarks were directed solely to this gentleman. It would have been most unbecoming of me to make a sweeping statement of this nature about the South Island,” Mr Goosman said. “My remarks were directed solely to the statements made by this man, as I did not consider that they were in the best interests of New Zealand.” ' , , Mr Goosman said that he deplored any spirit of parochialism. He had gone to the south to look into its problems, and to see that justice was done to the South Island.
