SKY SWEEPER WEAPON

TESTS IN UNITED STATES ANSWER TO FAST-FLYING AIRCRAFT WASHINGTON, Feb. 16. The Secretary for the Army, Mr Gordon Gray, has asked the House Military Appropriations Committee for 4,518,500 dollars to continue the test of a “ sky sweener,” a top secret anti-aircraft gun which the army says can hit aeroplanes of supersonic speed either by night or day. Mr Gray described the weapon as “ our best answer to the threat posed by aircraft at short and medium ranges.” The gun, which is of 77mm, is said to have radar-directed fire control and proximity-fused ammunition. Mr Gray said the army was now placing emphasis on tanks, their guns and ammunition, anti-aircraft missiles and guns, guided missiles, and medical research in psychiatry, radiation injury and preventive medicine.
