SEARCH PLANE CRASHES NZPA—Copyright

Rec. 9 p.m. NEW YORK, Feb. 15. An air force 829 Super-Fortress crashed today just after taking off from the air force base at Great Falls, Montana, killing eight of the crew. Seven other escaped uninjured. The Super-Fortress, which caught fire after crashing, was the command plane of a group of Super-Fortresses which took off from Great Falls to search for a 836 bomber.

The United States Coastguard later reported that all 17 occupants of the missing 836 bomber had been found safe on • islands off the British Columbia coast. Two fishing boats picked up some survivors from Ashdown Island, Queen Charlotte Sound, and others from Princess Royal Island.

The coastguard said that the first men found by the fishing boat reported that all the group had survived and that RCAF seacrh planes had sighted other survivors. The fishing boat was guided to the island by smoke. The bomber had been missing since yesterday when on a flight'from Eilson air force base, Alaska, to Fort Worth, Texas, with 17 persons on board. The captain had stated that he was ditching the aircraft because, one engine was on fire.
