FIELDS REVIEWED
THE TRIAL STAKES The Trial Stakes will have to be run In two divisions, and the form shown at the Dunedin Cup meeting should be a good guide here, among those who reached a place being Aegina, Centurion, Royal Saga, Blood Royal, and Bob’s March. A particularly promising sort in the field is Dissenter, a three-year-old by Defaulter from Capricious. He' has been placed in three of his five starts this season. The divisions had not been announced at the time of writing and in the meantime Centurion, Dissenter, and Blood Royal are selected. WAIKAURA TROT The Waikaura Trot will also be run in divisions and few of the acceptors have a background of recent form. Among the exceptions are Eileen Lilian, Highland Home, Highland Prince, Knightmare, Imperial Trust, and Dillon View. Those selected to race prominently are Highland Prince. Eileen Lilian, and Lady Teazle, who has not been started this season, but showed piamise last season. PUKEURI HIGH-WEIGHT A field of a dozen is carded for the High-weight Handicap, in which Volomai is topweight with 10.9. He was third in the President’s Handicap at Reefton and second in the Westland Handicap recently, and apparently is a fit horse. Bren Gun has been placed in three of his four races. this season and Show Boy went two good races at Wingatui this week. Pandemonium and Vanity King may be the best of the others, but the selections are Bren Gun, Show Boy, and Volomai. PRESIDENT’S HANDICAP Nine of the 10 acceptors for the President’s Handicap were raced at Wingatui, the exception being Flying, Sovereign. Frances showed a glimpse of form to finish third in the James Hazlett Gold Cup and should return to the winning list at any time. Flying Sovereign had her last race in the Members’ Handicap at Riccarton and she lost her chance when she ran into trouble in the early running. Prior to that, she had run fourth in the Stewards’ Handicap to Sweet Spray, Swayup and Magical. Infatuate did not race up to expectations at Wingatui, nor did Sir Abbot, but Infatuate in particular should race well * here. Lovemom was third in the Stewards' Handicap, of one mile, at Wingatui, and before that she had run third to Marut and Super Snipe over nine furlongs at the New Zealand Cup meeting. Of those further down in the handicaps, Speedy makes most appeal, but she will need firm and dry going. Flying Sovereign, Infatuate and Speedy are selected. WAITAKI HANDICAP ' Recent winning or placed form is strongly represented in the Waitaki Hack Handicap. Exchange won the Waikuku Hack Handicap at Rangiora from Bosun and Velveline, and he should finish in front of them again. Flying Agnes was a winner on the Coast, and Golden Winner led a field home in convincing style at Tapanui. Royal Scandal was fourth to Open Sky, Formation and Aberdare at Wingatui on Tuesday, and should be all the better for the race. Airspeed has a fine turn of speed, but may not carry it far enough, and the selections are Flying Agnes, Royal Scandal and Golden Winner. 1 OAMARU TROT The great majority of the horses engaged in the Oamaru Trot will be seen out earlier in the Waikaura Trot, and the running in that event will throw some light on the prospects here. A fresh horse in Validity will be considered, as he is reported to be a very likely improver, and he comes from C. S. Donald’s stable. He is selected as the likely winner from Lady Teazle and Imperial Trust. FLYING HANDICAP Whitley won the Paparua Handicap at the Grand National meeting,. but since then has failed to reach a place in three * starts, and Coral Arc may need a race or two, but The Hob looks well. He lost his chance at Wingatui by getting away badly. Western Winner returned to form at Wingatui and won the Flying Handicap, but he has 131 b more to carry tomorrow, and Ned Kelly, who finished second to him, comes in on 41b better terms. Crease made a good showing in the Publicans' Handicap and is a prospect for a race before the circuit is completed. Vitamin has shown winning, form on the Oamaru course, and the Beau Vite mare is nicely placed with 7.10. The selections are Vitamin, The Hob and Ned Kelly. FAREWELL HACK HANDICAP If Beau Soir is reserved for the Flying Hancficap, he will have a solid following because of his consistency. He finished in a place each day at Wingatui, where Open Sky was also a winner. Show Boy is another acceptor who has an earlier engagement, but wherever he starts he should be a good place bet at least. Revelry would be hard to beat if she made a good beginning, but usually she is badly placed when the field settles down. Indiana ran his best race for some time to finish a good fourth in the Waihola Handicap at Wingatui, and Supreme Command is a very likely improver. Those selected to race prominently are Beau Soir, Indiana and Show Boy.
Nominations for the Vincent meeting are due by 6 o’clock today.
