Field Marshal Smuts’s Warning

WORLD OPINION OFFENDED Rec. 8 p.m. CAPETOWN, Dec. 8. Field Marshal Smuts, opening the United Party Congress at Bloemfontein last night, spoke of gathering international storm clouds. ‘He said they boded ill for the Union, which “ had offended world opinion,” Field Marshal Smuts said South Africa needed friends. Nothing would split the people more than the move for a republic which, he said, was unnecessary because South Africa already had full freedom. Field Marshal Smuts said that by introducing the Citizenship Act, which delays franchise for immigrants for five years, the Government had created a new “uitlander” question. The country would suffer for that move. ,
