ARTHRITIS OPERATION
Nylon Replaces Cartilage NZPA—Copyright Rec. 9 p.m. . NEW YORK, Oct. 12. A small piece of nylon inserted inside a leg may be a boon to arthritis sufferers, judging by the results of a knee joint operation developed by Drs John Kuhns and Theodore Pottei;, of Boston. A nylon arthroplasty, as the operation is called, involves the insertion of nylon sheeting between the bone ends at the knee, enabling once stiffened joints to move again. Dr Kuhns said the nyon replaces cqrtilage destroyed by inflammation arising from chronic arthritis. . » The doctors reported that ine of the 20 patients at the hospital regained the ability to bend their knees, at a 70degree angle, 10 others achieved painless motion, and one operation, which was complicated by an impaired blood supply, was unsuccessful. They said the operation required only about one hour.
