A memorial tablet to Captain James Cook, R.N., is to be unveiled at Mercury Bay, Coromandel Peninsula, by the Governor-General, Sir Bernard Freyberg, V C., in January. The ships of the Royal New Zealand Navy will be present. Captain Cook visited the bay in the Endeavour iii 1,769 to observe the transit of Mercury, hence the name he gave it.
