Beautifying Society The North Otago Beautifying Society at its meeting on Wednesday night received advice that a bequest of £SUO had been left to the society to be invested, and that the interest only could be used for the general work of the society. Dr A. Smith Morton was in the chair. The Oamaru Borough Council solicited the assistance of the society in improving Roberts Park at the north end of Oamaru, and it was decided to give the necessary support when required. The Post Office site was discussed at length. Some question of doubt arose as to who actually owned the land in question and the secretary was instructed to write to the borough solicitors to clarify the position before any work was commenced. Additional work in Douglas terrace was also discussed at length, and Messrs K. Ballinger, B. Steven and J. Tait were asked to report to the next meeting suggesting possible improvements that could be' carried out by the society. It was mentioned that several trees growing in the streets needed replacement and it was decided to inform the Borough Council that the replacement should be carried out in the winter months. Reserve D was also discussed and it was pbinted out that many of the society’s trees had been killed and damaged by stock grazing on that area. Mr B. Steven reported that the matter was being discussed by the Borough Council and that in future the ground would be let only for the grazing of sheep. Mr Tait said that although many trees had been destroyed the remainder were looking well. Several of the seats belonging to the society In the town were in need of repair, and it was decided that the society should have all the seats repaired and repainted during the winter months. It was also decided that the society should procure two seats for'the small park area at the Junction Hotel corner, and -it was suggested that the committee erect a shelter and provide seating at the Junction Hotel bus stop. After discussion on the replanting of the trees in Lynn street, it was decided to advise the borough council that the society would pay for the cost of the trees when replanted. Several sub-committees were set up to report back to the next meeting on the works planned by the society.
