COUNCIL'S MONTHLY MEETINC WAR MEMORIAL PROJECT A deputation from the North Otago War .vlemorial Committee, comprising Messrs T. C. Kirkness, B. B. Walton, and T. Mitchell, waited on the Oamaru Borough Council at its monthly meeting last night, .oliciting a financial contribution towards the North Otago War Memorial. Mr Mitchell said there was a general eeling in the committee that the proposed nemorial would grace the corner. The objective was rather high, and the idea >£ approaching the council was with a /iew to giving a fillip to further collections. A house-to-house canvass would be held in the town, and farming organi;ations would also be approaced. The committee was aiming at £6OOO, which it was hoped would cover all contingencies. Mr Mitchell said the architect estimated the cost of the work at £5400. Other local bodies were also to be approached, Mr Kirkness said. The proposal was quite different from anything, .hat had been outlined previously in Jamaru, and the committee felt sure hat the plan would appeal to the public. The matter was deferred for consideraion with the estimates. The Mayor, Mr M. F. E. Cooney, was in the chair, and there were also present Urs W R. Laney, A. Wilson, A. E. Hodge, Hamilton, J. I. McEwan, J. Meikle, O. it. Wise, F..J. D. Blackgrove. E. S. Stubbs, md B. Steven. The Waitakl Electric Power Board advised that it had acceded to the council's request to alter the position of *the poles along the south side of Takaro Park and to bear the cost as a contribution to the scheme for improving the lighting of the park.—Received. It was decided to hold a meeting of joint committees on June 9 to consider the estimates for the coming year. The recommendation of the joint committees that the Mayor be appointed to fill the vacancy on the Waitaki Electric Power Board caused by the resignation of Mr H. P Kent was approved.
