NEW CRUISER COMMISSIONED • WASHINGTON, Rec. 9 p.m. „ May 14. The 17,000-ton cruiser Salem, which cost 50,000.000 dollars, was commissioned at Boston to-day. The Salem’s main battery of nine automatic Bin guns can fire four times faster than America’s war-time cruisers. The secondary batteries consist of 12 dualpurpose, twin-mounted 5-inchers. 20 dual-purpose 3-inchers and 12 20mm. guns. The Salem is 716 ft long and has a speed exceeding 30 knots. Her two sister ships are the Desmoines and Newport News.
