SECRETARY OF NAVY

NEBRASKA LAWYER APPOINTED WASHINGTON, Rec. 9 p.m. May 13. The appointment of Mr Francis Patrick Matthews, aged 62. an Omaha (Nebraska) Sawyer, as Seci'etary of the Navy was announced to-day by the White House. Mr Matthews succeeds Mr John L. Sullivan, who resigned in protest against the scrapping of his plans to build a giant aircraft carrier. Mr Matthews, who is a Democrat, was active in last year’s presidential election campaign. He has had little association with the navy.
