INTER-STATE RUGBY
NEW SOUTH WALES DEFEATS QUEENSLAND NZP A—Copyright Rec. 9 p.m. BRISBANE, May 14. The first inter-State Rugby Union match of the season between New South Wales and Queensland resulted in a runaway victory for New South Wales by 29 points to 8. A startling feature of the play was that 17 penalties were given against New South Wales and only five against Queensland. The Queensland forwards P. Harvey and W. Beckett and the five-eighth, E. Broad, have an excellent chance of being included in the Australian team to meet the Maoris next month. The Wallaby five-eighth, Broad, played soundly, but overdid his reverse passing. The match was notable for the weakness of the Queensland backs, who were so poor that halfway through the second spell many spectators walked out. The Queensland forwards gave the backs ample service, and were better than the New South Wales pack in the first half, but soon showed the results of wear. With the exception of C. Burke, who had one of his rare off days, the New South Wales back line was excellent. Chiefly because of heady back play, New South Wales went from the halftime score of B—38 —3 to 29—3 in 30 minutes. C. Eastes scored three tries through unselfish work by Blomley and Allan. C. Davis. T. Allan, and C. Windon also scored tries, and B. Piper converted four and kicked a penalty. For Queensland, E. Broad scored a try and P. Costello converted and kicked a penalty.
