FIRE ON TANKER

VOYAGE FROM DUNEDIN OFFICER FATALLY BURNED Fire broke out recently on board the Anglo-Saxon Petroleum Company’s tanker Narica, while she was in the Java Sea on her way to Singapore from Dunedin, her last port of discharge. The chief engineer, Mr Baney, of the vessel was fatally burned. On her way to New Zealand, the tanker Neritopsis, which is at Dunedin, passed near by the Narica in the Java Sea and received a report of the accident by light signals. The fire, which was on the starboard side of the ship aft, trapped three firemen in the messroom. Immediately a fire-fighting party was mustered and two of the men were rescued unharmed. When the fire was extinguished the body of the third was found charred beyond recognition. Upon the crew being called together it was found that the chief engineer was missing.
