EXTREME PROVOCATION

MAORI FOUND GUILTY OF MANSLAUGHTER RECOMMENDATION TO MERCY PA AUCKLAND, May 13. A sentence of three years’ imprisonment with hard labour was imposed by Mr Justice Cornish in the Supreme Court to-day on Tiemi Ranapiri aged 41 a Maori labourer, who was found guilty of the manslaughter of Paul Pohio at Tangoio on February 6. Mill. W. Dowling, for Ranapiri, said the jury’s recommendation to mercy was the strongest recommendation of its kind he had ever heard and asked the judge to take this into full account. His Honor said the jury’s recommendation was made because of the extreme provocation which prompted Ranapiri. He was taking that and the good character of the accused into account, but he must also remember the effects of the sentence as a deterrent in the interests of the community as a whole.
