SIDESHOW FRAUD’S
PROTECTION OF PUBLIC AGRICULTURAL SOCIETIES TAKE ACTION The public had to be protected from fraudulent sideshows and therefore all associations should see that only licensed showmen, whether they were members of the Showmen’s Guild or not, should be allowed on the grounds, said Mr A. C. Cameron, of Dunedin, when discussing the question of space for sideshows at a meeting of the Southern District Council of the Royal Agricultural Society at Gore yesterday. One sideshow had displayed huge posters showing snakes, lizards and other animals, Mr Cameron continued, but inside the tent were only stuffed replicas. Another show advertised monsters from past generations, with a line in small print stating, “You must see these lithos.” Inside the tents litographs were on display. The council decided to adhere to last year’s resolution that where space permitted all applications from licensed snowmen be accepted, regardless of whether they are members of the guild or otherwise, and that in cases where only limited space» is available, a ballot be held; also that ari endeavour be made to accommodate all members of the guild together.
