MINISTER INTERVENES

COLLECTION FROM WEST COAST MINERS PA GREYMOUipi, May 13. The Minister of Mines and Labour, Mr McLagan, has intervened to prevent the collection of funds to aid the unemployed Auckland carpenters from members of the West Coast and Buller Miners’ Union. West Coast union leaders said the Minister had instructed clerks in State mine offices not to deduct levies for the carpenters from pay envelopes. “It is illegal,” said Mr McLagan, when the message from Greymouth was referred to him in Wellington tonight. “ State mines offices on the West coast were asked to deducl this illegal levy from the pay of the employees of the State collieries. The matter was referred to me for direction as to what should be done and I instructed the offices not to collect the illegal levy.”
