CARPENTERS’ STRIKE
HUGE COST TO INDUSTRY FOUR HUNDRED HOUSES “ LOST ” PA AUCKLAND. May 13. The production hold-up in the building industry has resulted in £B7O 000 worth of work being lost, according to estimates taken out by the Auckland Master Builders’ Association. It was 12 weeks yesterday since 1400 carpenters were dismissed for going slow. Seven hundred of these men, it is estimated, are still out of the industry The association considers that nearly 400 houses have been “lost.” Painters and plasterers generally have caught up with back work and are now looking for sufficient work to keep them going. Meanwhile, maintenance and minor repair work is absorbing available labour, but for how long cannot be determined.
