RATING RELIEF
AGRICUTURAL SOCIETIES ‘Any agricultural and pastoral association burdened by rates on its grounds could probably get some relief because of the restricted use to which the grounds were put, said Mr A. W. Cooper, of Gore, at a meeting of the Southern District Council of the Royal Agricultural Society at Gore yesterday. Exemption would probably apply.only to grounds situated in town areas, for the rating fees for country grounds were generally light. “ During the course of a revaluation of tL ,2 town of Gore, I learned that the Valuer-general is empowered under a section of the Valuation of Land Act to make such reduction in the assessment of the capital and unimproved value of the show grounds to such extent as he may thirk fit by virtue of the restricted uses made of the grounds,” stated a letter entered by Mr Cooper. He thought that there were probably other associations which could obtain relief from rates by use of the appeal. By operating the section, Gore had obtained relief to the extent of about £6O a year.
