CONSTRUCTION BEGINS

WORLD’S LARGEST AIRCRAFT CARRIER NEW YORK. Apl. 18. The keel of the 65,000-ton USS United States, the world’s largest aircraft carrier, was laid at Newport News to-day. No ceremony attended the start of the construction of the 186.000,000-dollar carrier, which has been the centre of strong controversy between the air force and the navy. President Truman and the Secretary of Defence, Mr Louis Johnson, both declined last week to answer questions whether the carrier would be completed. The United States, which is designed to handle long-range bombers, will be 1090 ft long, have a beam of 130 ft at the water line, with a maximum fixed width above the water line of 190 ft. She is scheduled for completion in 1952
