LOCKNIT HAS SHOWN PROMISING FORM

Judged by the manner in which she won the Autumn Handicap at Hutt Park last Saturday. Locknit is a promising pacer, and is likely to add to her record before the end of the season. She was always travelling nicely on Saturday, and won going away by six lengths from Double Deck, who beat Regency for second money right on the post. Locknit has had two wins and eight placings in 24 starts this season, her first win being in the Waihora Handicap at the Banks Peninsula meeting on March 5. She is a six-year-old mare by Grattan Loyal from Celanese, by Jack Potts from Blush, by Brent Locanda from a mare by Advance. Blush has been a prolific brood mare, having had 17 foals, including twins, the last three being by the thoroughbred horse Silver Arrow. Priceless, Major Guy, and Novacord, who were beaten out of a place in Locknit’s race, are probably the best of the progeny of Blush to race. Her daughters are proving successful at the stud, however War Bride, who is the dam of a recent winner in Systematic, being one of them. Got Down in Float Air Mail is reported to have got down in the float on the way to Rangiora, and this mav account for her poor showing in the Cheviot Cup last week. Broke Badly Global Voyage, a three-year-old halfbrother to Navigate and Barrier Reef, broke badly at the start of his races at the Roxburgh meeting. When he settled down, however, he trotted solidly, and he may improve with age. He has more than average ability. Determined Challenge Counterpart threw out a determined challenge over the last two furlongs of the Miller’s Flat Handicap at Roxburgh on Wednesdav, and she failed by a neck to catch Biddy’s Pet. She will be improved by the race, and should be hard to beat next time out. Returned Home On Approval, runner-up to Gay Knight in the Armstrong Memorial and winner of the Royal Handicap at Hytt Park last Saturday was sent home after the first day of ‘the meeting. His owner, Mr C. L. Rhodes, will be represented by Sir Peterson in the main races to-morrow. Promising Novice One of the most promising novices paraded at Roxburgh on Saturday was Winston Hall. He began smartly in both the Teviot Trial Stakes and the Miller s Flat Handicap, and, after being one of the leaders throughout, he finished second and third respectively. He is a six-year-old gelding by Dillon Hall from Lady s Chain, and should win Ills way out of maiden class before long. Solid Performance Kiatc-a went two good races at the Roxburgh saoeting on Wednesday for a win in the Ethics. Handicap Trot and a second to Loyal Baby to the Tradesmen s Trotting Handicap. At his second start he made up his 60 yards' handicap in the first few furlongs and was handily placed throughout. He failed by a neck to cat.ch Loyal Baby, who led from the start. Kiatoa should be worth following at the Wyndham meeting next week. He is trained at Invercargill bv J. R Cameron for Mr A O. Collings.
