FIELDS REVIEWED

NOVICE STAKES NO. 1 With the first day’s winner of the corresponding race out of the way the picks of the Novice Stakes would appear to be Open Range and Air Somiet, who finished second and third respectively. Lady Melville went a fair race for fourth, but on Paper Open Range and Air Sonnet looic like finishing in front of her again. The field includes a number of horses who dm not start on Wednesday, among them being Don't Listen, who will come into favour if the going happens to be son. Another new-comer is Indiana, who finished in a place in each of the two-year-old events at Wingatui. Open Range and Air Sonne, will probably dispute favouritism, with Indiana and Don’t Listen the next best backed. WAIKURA TROT Metropolis and Aerogard, each of whom ran a fiist and a second on Wednesday, will meet in the Waikaura Trot and. judged on first day’s form, they should both be prominent at the finish. Trouville beat Metropolis in the second division of the Weston Trot, both being on the limit, and to-morrow they will be on 36 yards Swithindale and Contempt would need to make very little improvement to get a portion of the stake and Fernbrook Jack, who was a late scratched on Wednesday, should add interest to the race. Metropolis and Aerogard may dispute favouritism, with Contempt and Fernbrook Jack next in the order. NOVICE STAKES No. 2 Sweet Lorraine, who added to her consistent record by running second to Vainly on Wednesday, is the logical favourite for the Novice Stakes No. 2. She certainly deserves the reward of a win.' Boon Companion and Silver Chase finished right up with Sweet Lorraine for the third and fourth placings, and they are likely to appeal to place bettors. Two newcomers in Cold Feet and Jacquee have placed form to recommend them, but the public are likely to support Sweet Lorraine, Boon Companion and Silver Chase. HIGH-WEIGHT HANDICAP Fresh horses in Bridgehead, Batal, Wee Mac, Knight Crusader, Baffling and Great Chase will add to the interest in the Highweight Handicap. Atreus went a good race for third in the corresponding race on Wednesday and a rise of 21b should not prevent him from being prominent again. Bay Fort, who was second to Wandering Minstrel, has 41b more to carry, bill that is not likelv to lose him any support. Bridgehead is a possibility with 10.9, and if Wee Mac has derived benefit from his recent racing he will be a hard horse to beat. Air Lord and Baffling look the best of the others, but the heaviest support way come for Atreus, Bay Fort and Bridgehead. GARDINER MEMORIAL HANDICAP A field of nine has been paid up for in the principal race, and first day’s form points to Bren Gun as a possibility He made most of the pace and his third was a good effort. Balkis, the first day’s winner, has been raised 91b for her win, but if she gallops up to first day’s form she should at least reach a place. Revolte ran a fair race in the Cup and Bobby Dazzler and Thornbridge were both finishing on and should be improved by the race. Grill did not start in the Cup but he would need to show improvement on recent form to have a chance. . Banshee is capable of winning, but she is too unreliable to be recommended. Saieda did not stick on in the Cup and Responsive will probably be preferred to him so far as the light-weights are concerned. Bren Gun. Thornbridge and Balkis may be the favourites. WAITAKI HACK HANDICAP in* vvanaki Hack Handicap has drawn a field of 20 and a newcomer to BowUng Green is likely to be selected as one o-f the favourites. She won the Parkinson Handicap, of nine furlongs, at the Banks Peninsula meeting earlier this month. Wandering Minstrel won the High-weight Handicap on Wednesday and another first day’s winner in Running Brook is also engaged. With the penalty he entailed, however, he may find Crease and Zarcon harder horses to beat than was the case on Wednesday. Dinnyhazer should be suited by the distance, and a fresh horse in Salmon King, one of A. E. Didham’s team, is a likely improver. Paper View

and Sweet Lorraine have other engagements and the favourite may be selected from Bowling Green. Salmon King and Dinnyhazer. LANDON TROT Several of the horses engaged in the Landon Trot will be started in the Waikaura Trot earlier in the day, and the form they show then should shed some light on the prospects here. At this stage, however, those who appear to hold the brightest prospects are Contempt, Metropolis, Aerogard and Retribution. FAREWELL HACK HANDICAP Vitamin won so decisively on Wednesdav that she is sure to be in demand again She will, however, not find it easy to give 101 b to Attractive Air. who was not started on Wednesday. The Airway fillv is very well at present. Paper View kept up his consistent record by running third on the first day and. with the same weight, he should take part in the finish again. Exchange finished second to Vitamin in the Parkside Handicap on Wednesday and All Alone, a fresh horse, is due to get a share of a stake. Vitamin and Attractive Air will no doubt dispute favouritism, and Exchange and Paper View may be the next in demand.
