APPLES AND PEARS
GUARANTEED PRICES GROWERS SATISFIED Special to the Daily Times NELSON, Mar. 11. Mr Frank Archer, of Mahana, Nelson, director of the Fruitgrowers’ Federation, said this morning that in view of the provisions of the Act and the fact that there was an increase of 4d on what had been fixed as the standard cost of production he, thought the announced guaranteed average price of 9s 6d a case for the 1949 apple and pear crop satisfactory. The production of fruit would be lighter than last year and naturally the growers’ incomes would not be as great and apparently that fact had been taken into consideration in fixing the price. The cost of production figure was about the same as last year. The overall return of the industry would probably not be as high as in 1948, said Mr Archer, though he could not be definite on that point as last year’s returns had not yet been completed. Mr Archer explained that the price of various varieties could be fixed at 6d above or below the standard cost of production. The price announced would be for the fruit, and the case and all packing materials would be extra.
