PORT RADAR SYSTEM EXPERIMENTAL SET INSTALLED PA AUCKLAND, Jan. 14. t A port radar system, the first of its kind in New Zealand, has been installed by the Auckland Harbour Board at the Mount Victoria signal station, and will be in general operation as soon as the signalmen have been trained to work it. Its main use will be to plot ships entering the port at distances up to 25 miles, in order to prevent a delay in providing a pilot for them, and it is expected to be most valuable on days such as yesterday, when murky weather limited visibility to less than 10 miles. The equipment used is on loan from the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research, and the installation work was done by an Auckland firm. For the next year the system will be regularly used, in order to obtain data to find out whether a radar system is necessary, and, if so, what type would be most suitable. The present set is an American one. which shows the harbour and gulf area as a plan, with land and ships appearing as “blips” of light on the screen.
