WEATHER REPORTING
INTRODUCTION OF NEW CODE MORE INFORMATION TO BE SUPPLIED Special Correspondent WELLINGTON, Dec. 29. Weather observers throughout the world will simultaneously change to a new code' for weather reporting on Saturday next. In New Zealand, as ift all member countries of the international meteorological organisation, officers at every weather station, whether in the capital city or in a lonely lighthouse, have received special instructions for a simultaneous switch-oyer. The new code of reporting will afford more information on weather variations and in particular will meet the increasing requirements of aviation. The new international code is so set out that lay weather-men can observe and report accurately in detail. There is much more detail provided for under the new code for such matters as visibility, wind-speed and direction of wind, all of which are vital to aviation. The code provides for the better co-ordination of this and other weather information. To ensure that all observers comply fully with the new requirements, three members of the staff of the Weather Office in Wellington will maintain among them a 24-hour watch for three days. They will oversee the receipt of reports and communicate where necessary with observers.
