STONE FRUIT
SUPPLIES, FROM CENTRAL OTAGO OVER-RIPENESS EVIDENT After being closed since Friday night, fruit marts in Dunedin opened yesterday morning to receive the first large consignments of stone fruits from the Central Otago orchards. Owing to the prolonged period of hot weather in the main fruit-growing centres, the fruit had ripened very quickly, and prices in Dunedin yesterday were lower than would have been the case normally. All the fruit sold well, however. ‘ v This first big consignment from Central Otago is about three weeks ahead of the normal yearly schedule. Besides the regular tradespeople gathered round, the auctioneers at yesterday’s sales, there .was quite a big number of other people present either through curiosity or with the object of picking up a bargain. From Cromwell. Alexandra and Roxburgh, consignments of cherries, Newcastle apricots and Mayflower peaches were received. This consignment of cherries is usually expected by the merchants in the middle of January. Most of the apricots and peaches were •over-ripe. ■ .. .. *
